VR sports training programs are becoming the norm in the sports industry.

Artificial reality and virtual simulations provide anytime, anywhere fitness opportunities for college and professional athletes alike. VR sports programs also offer personal fitness enthusiasts expanded opportunities for taking their game to the next level.

Superior athletic performance is the result of repetition. That’s why athletes devote hour after hour to practicing the skills they’ll use in the game. Immersive simulations allow users to practice again and again as they correct their form, perfecting their responses to external stimuli.

Training with virtual reality has change the game for professional athletes in almost every sport. It’s also changing training for the everyday athlete seeking to improve coordination, agility, and fitness.

Improving college athletics training

College sports are integral to any higher education experience. They are more than entertainment; college sports define what the school is about. Students look forward to the games, and they wear branded clothing in support of the team. Ultimately, their seasonal successes define the school’s brand, and season performance affect the university’s reputation.

Universities recruit top athletes, educate, and train them. Athletic training can be expensive, however, costing several thousands of dollars every week per athlete. The training complexes cost tens of millions of dollars, and that doesn’t include the cost of equipment or coaching staff.

Virtual reality slashes the cost of traditional athletic training in college. VR sports training programs take up less room. Imagine throwing long passes or working on your swing in a 12×12 room instead of out on the field. Athletes can practice over and over, without having a coach present, any time, regardless of the weather.

American universities like Texas A&M, Clemson and Nevada have already embraced VR sports training programs for their football teams. Many more are joining the ranks of those using simulated training programs to improve athlete performance because VR tech companies like Eon Sports and StriVR have created next level training for college athletes. The software programs immerse player in the game’s action, requiring them to practice split-second decision-making and physical response.

The many uses VR training in pro sports

The Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots also rely on virtual rely on simulations for their training. So do many other professional teams in the NFL and NBA.

VR sports training programs aren’t just for American football. Video assistant referees (VAR) are gaining acceptance in European football, where they were integrated for the first time in the 2018 World Cup.

The U.S. ski team also relies on VR sports training for Olympic athletes. Skier Laurenne Ross trained rigorously using virtual simulations of the slopes in Pyeongchang for the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The fact that she had torn her ACL a year earlier didn’t stop her from training. VR sports training helped Ross reduce her recovery time by half.

Injuries that take a player out of the fame can affect the performance of the entire team. Virtual reality training help athletes recover more quickly so they can return to the game sooner.

VR sports training programs aren’t just for college and pro athletes. They’re now part of training routines for everyday sports enthusiasts as well.

For several years, fitness buffs have relied on wearable technology to monitor heart rate and oxygen levels, but it’s virtual reality that will help you practice physical movement and improve your mindset.
