VR Training for Police and Military – Part 2

Published on November 18th, 2018 by Debi Christensen

VR training for police and military has come a long way since its early use.

Military pilots during the Cold War used flight simulators. Police officers have relied on simulations with firearms. With the advent of computers in the 1980s, it was only a matter of time until virtual reality completely changed the training environment.

Police officers and soldiers rely on VR training to increase their situational awareness, not only in the air, but on the ground. Virtual reality training provides realistic experiences for any possible scenario. These situations include working with a person attempting to act out suicidal ideations and responding to an active shooter situation.

VR as a training ground

Military applications

The military has identified multiple uses for VR training. They use virtual reality to create authentic medical response emergencies in battlefield-like conditions, engage in live-fire combat conditions, and participate in boot camp simulations.

Using Synthetic Training Environments, U.S. Army personnel also can navigate through a city they’ve never seen before. Soldiers familiarize themselves with foreign terrain without leaving their base. Their virtually-acquired spatial awareness of unfamiliar geography gives them an edge in evaluating risk in their physical environment.

Australia also is exploring the potential of VR training, and their military personnel engages in similar virtual maneuvers. The Australian AR/VR platform includes logistics training for terrain visualization and simulation, among other features for prepping soldiers for the battlefield.

Warfare isn’t the only military use of virtual reality training. For example, soldiers with PTSD use VR to learn how to deal with conditions that trigger their anxiety and stress. VR allows for a safe training environment. It eventually acclimates the trainee to using coping mechanisms in new or unexpected situations.

Law enforcement applications

Likewise, police and law enforcement officers are also relying VR training to give them on-the-job experiences such as:

  • Conducting routine traffic stops
  • De-escalating conflict
  • Engaging with an active shooter
  • Assessing danger amid distractions like fire alarms and flashing lights

With enough experience in diverse situations, the police will be better trained to make the kind of quick decisions needed to save lives – theirs and the citizens they protect.

Leaders in VR training for police and military

Police and military personnel continually face life and death situations requiring intense focus and sharp reflexes. Therefore, the need for VR training for police and military has increased.

VR training companies like Strivr and 360Immersive create authentic role-playing simulations in realistic scenarios for trainees. These companies meet agency need for unlimited, cost-effective training. Live trainings, on the other hand, must be scheduled in small groups. Also, live trainings depend on the availability of a trainer. Virtual reality training, on the other hand, is a self-paced experience.

With the goal of creating the most realistic training simulations possible, Apex Officer provides one of the most immersive VR trainings for police officers. Its devotion to interactive training has made the company an industry leader.

Apex Officer simulations transport users into “a 360-degree, 6DoF, virtual environment that looks, feels, interacts identically to a real world situation.”

Simulations include firearm use, de-escalation strategies, use of force and crisis intervention simulations. Police train with facsimiles of their duty weapons, not some kid’s version of a service firearm or what Silicon Valley thinks a gun should look like. The simulations also require the use of batons, tasers, and flashlights.

Virtual reality training raises situational awareness and gives trainees the hands-on experiences they need to be successful in performing their duties.

VR training for police and military changes the training landscape for personnel who put their lives on the line for others.
